2022.01.19 07:00 ApproximateIdentity Unable to speed up gcp bucket upload with using background threads/processes

Basically what I want is to upload files to a gcp bucket in a background thread. I want the speed to mainly be limited by the latency of a single upload. In other words, say I have 5 files to upload and each has a latency of 1 second, I would expect to be able to upload all 5 in 1 second since they would be running simultaneously. Given that this should be network bound, I would expect the upload to really be mainly limited by the number of threads/processes I use. Here is my first version using threads (some things like bucket names have been changed):

import uuid import os import tempfile import shutil from threading import Thread from queue import Queue from google.cloud import storage class Uploader(): def __init__(self, bucket_name='bucket_name', prefix='prefix', num_threads=1): self._working_dir = tempfile.TemporaryDirectory() self._queue = Queue(maxsize=max(10, 2 * num_threads)) self._threads = [Thread(target=_uploader, args=(self._queue, bucket_name, prefix)) for _ in range(num_threads)] [thread.start() for thread in self._threads] def __enter__(self): return self def __exit__(self, exc_type, exc_value, exc_traceback): self.close() def send(self, filepath): filename = os.path.basename(filepath) location = tempfile.mktemp(dir=self._working_dir.name) shutil.copy(filepath, location) self._queue.put((filename, location)) def close(self): for _ in range(len(self._threads)): self._queue.put(None) [thread.join() for thread in self._threads] def _uploader(queue, bucket_name, prefix): client = storage.Client() bucket = client.get_bucket(bucket_name) while True: payload = queue.get() if payload is None: return filename, location = payload #filename = str(uuid.uuid4()) # Tried changing to unique file names but see no difference blob = bucket.blob(f"{prefix}/{filename}") blob.upload_from_filename(location) os.remove(location) if __name__ == '__main__': import time for num_threads in range(1, 10): print(f"num_threads: {num_threads}") with Uploader(num_threads=num_threads) as uploader: start = time.time() filenames = os.listdir('local_dir') count = 0 for _ in range(5): for filename in filenames: count += 1 uploader.send(os.path.join('local_dir', filename)) stop = time.time() print("average:", (stop - start) / count, "total:", stop - start) num_threads: 1 average: 0.09320656458536784 total: 2.796196937561035 num_threads: 2 average: 0.093253493309021 total: 2.79760479927063 num_threads: 3 average: 0.12153170903523763 total: 3.645951271057129 num_threads: 4 average: 0.15686078866322836 total: 4.705823659896851 num_threads: 5 average: 0.19288695653279622 total: 5.786608695983887 num_threads: 6 average: 0.22957363923390706 total: 6.887209177017212 num_threads: 7 average: 0.26377089818318683 total: 7.9131269454956055 num_threads: 8 average: 0.3058485984802246 total: 9.175457954406738 num_threads: 9 average: 0.34414722919464114 total: 10.324416875839233
What I don't really understand is why there's all this slowdown. I don't don't see why the GIL should be affecting an operation like this, but I tried using processes instead just to be sure:
import uuid import os import tempfile import shutil import traceback from multiprocessing import Process, Queue from google.cloud import storage class Uploader(): def __init__(self, bucket_name='bucket_name', prefix='prefix', num_processes=1): self._working_dir = tempfile.TemporaryDirectory() self._queue = Queue(maxsize=max(10, 2 * num_processes)) self._processes = [Process(target=_uploader, args=(self._queue, bucket_name, prefix)) for _ in range(num_processes)] [process.start() for process in self._processes] def __enter__(self): return self def __exit__(self, exc_type, exc_value, exc_traceback): self.close() def send(self, filepath): filename = os.path.basename(filepath) location = tempfile.mktemp(dir=self._working_dir.name) shutil.copy(filepath, location) self._queue.put((filename, location)) def close(self): for _ in range(len(self._processes)): self._queue.put(None) [process.join() for process in self._processes] def _uploader(queue, bucket_name, prefix): client = storage.Client() bucket = client.get_bucket(bucket_name) while True: payload = queue.get() if payload is None: return filename, location = payload #filename = str(uuid.uuid4()) # Tried changing to unique file names but see no difference try: blob = bucket.blob(f"{prefix}/{filename}") blob.upload_from_filename(location) os.remove(location) except: traceback_info = traceback.format_exc() print(traceback_info) if __name__ == '__main__': import time for num_processes in range(1, 10): print(f"num_processes: {num_processes}") with Uploader(num_processes=num_processes) as uploader: start = time.time() filenames = os.listdir('local_dir') count = 0 for _ in range(5): for filename in filenames: count += 1 uploader.send(os.path.join('local_dir', filename)) stop = time.time() print("average:", (stop - start) / count, "total:", stop - start)
But I see basically exactly the same result. Is there something totally obvious I'm missing here? Why am I getting so much slowdown in the average time?
Thanks for any wisdom anyone can provide!

2022.01.19 07:00 nudeldifudel What Boba Fett should have said when he walked into the Casino:

"Black Krasantan. Stop now, unless you want to end up back in my dungeons again. Its not empty anymore".
It would show strenght and reassurence that boba has had krasantan in his dungeon, which means boba can handle him. And the fact that its not emmptry anymore is threatening in a great vaguely way. Like what does he mean?
Instead he does nothing, just stands there. Like why would anyone feel respect for him or protected under his rule, if anyone can just randomly go wild and start fighting someone for no reason and rips their arms of an "innocent" person, right in front of him. Like in what universe does that look good. Boba acted like this was none of his business, when it is 100% his business in this place and moment.

2022.01.19 07:00 mgreene888 r/Christian is Positive good for this reason...

I have seen many posts here recently that question this reddit for being “negative”, anti-Christian, a hangout for atheists, and so on; but here is one a reason I think that an open Christian reddit is a good thing.
I have learned by experience that most of the more popular “Christian” subreddits will not allow anyone to post a message that calls on American political Christians (ie right-wing conservatives) to repent of their negative attitudes - hypocrisy, racism, hate, nativism, etc.
At least the very least, a message that compares the negative attitudes of the contemporary church with the actual teachings of the BIBLE can still be published on this reddit. To give you an idea, I have been permanently banned from the following “Christian” reddits for posting the exact same items I post here:
SouthernBaptist – with nasty un-Christian comments from the mod – later, cowardly deleted even from offline conversations
Evangelical – same mod again
Postevangelical
Reformed
Christians - My posts are routinely removed – at first the mods claimed self-promotion, and then when I removed all the links – they just started removing them without comment
Non-Christian: Banned from three Marcus Malloy sites for disagreeing with his wildly simplistic half true contentions that the Nazi’s were Christians – although admittedly I like his warning against incipient rightwing fascism in America

2022.01.19 07:00 DryWish8617 Is he ghosting me?

I went on a third date (dinneafter dinner drinks) that ended up with us hooking that night, Friday. He texted the next day and I ended up hooking up with him again Saturday night. I have not heard from him since he dropped me off Sunday morning. I’m just wondering if I’m being ghosted. I honestly am beginning to feel pretty shitty and I’m not really sure what to do. Any advice would be appreciated.
